Sign the Petition for Due Diligence
We formally request that you suspend/stay the LSSI contract immediately and spend the next 12 months reevaluating the decision to leave the LA County library system. We understand that outcome could be that a city run library is the best option but a comprehensive study must be done.
Since your Aug. 24 vote on the libraries, our community has learned:
- The unexpected costs and loss of revenue has already exceeded an additional $3 million on top of the multi-million contract that has been signed to have LSSI run our libraries.
- The appearance of backroom deals along with recently revealed internal city emails point to the fact that the decision to hire LSSI occurred before the Aug. 24 city council meeting and only opportunity for public input.
- As part of the L.A. County Library System, patrons now have access to a large collection of materials and services. This access was not investigated by the City prior to contract signing and the cost of comparable access is still to be determined.
- The signing of a contract with LSSI by our City Manager may be illegal. Under California’s Municipal Libraries Act (Ed.C. §18900, et seq.), only duly constituted, independent Board of Library Trustees library trustees can sign these types of contracts.
Council members and city staff have received over 1700 petitions, several hundred comment cards, hundreds of public comments and phone calls to not separate from the LA County Public Library System and/or to slow down for adequate community input and sufficient planning to occur for OUR libraries with OUR taxes. In light of our concerns and possible bad legal advice or misinformation, we request that you reconsider the advice and recommendations upon which your current actions are based.
Sincerely,
Petition Signatures

Lori Rivas,
Please re-consider your decision, and listen to the voices of the people.
Melanie Grijalva,
I think the city was hasty on its decision. Public input should be considered strongly, since we are the ones using the library.

You did not involve the community and our schools in this decision....despite your failed attempts to reach out to them after the fact.
Elmarie Hyman,
xxxxxxxx,
While a city library sounds great on paper, and especially great for the city's treasury, IT is NOT so great for the users.
The loss of quick and free access to the large County of LA Public library's collection outweights all pros you have brought up so far.
Ken Kish,
Dana Eklund,
Kim James,
The City Council should have requested community input BEFORE signing up with LSSI. The County Services were fine, and we do not know what we will get with LSSI. The Council moved too quickly and therefore the motives are suspect.
Chana Keefer,
We use the library every week and have greatly appreciated being able to supplement our educational opportunities in such a cost-effective manor. This is a public service funded by our taxes therefore the taxpayers voices needed to be heard before the fact.
xxxxxxxx,
Vicky Kraft,
How long with the City of SCV continue to ignore the people and voters in the community? LSSI will not make any money, fees or otherwise from me. I have removed my requests and holds from the Valencia, Newhall and Canyon Country libraries. I will continue to utilize the LA County Library system by going to the Castaic Location. I have STOPPED going to Valencia Library twice a week because of the action of the city.
I encourage everyone to stop using the Valencia, Canyon Country and Newhall libraries as soon as possible. The city can't have any 'for profit' libraries if the community stops using them! Protest by not using the very libraries that the city is seeking!
Cecill holguin,
My family and I are extensive users of the library's book request system and we feel that by separating from the LA County library system the number of books available will be limited, or will take an excessive amount of time to be available. Please reconsider your decision.
Raida Gatten,
Limiting my access to millions of items and a wide variety of library materials is a violation of my rights and doing so without the consent and approval of the citizens of Santa Clarita is unethical.
Hans Hansen,
xxxxxxxx,
Contracting to LSSI is not in the best interest of Santa Clarita residents. Privatizing public libraries is typically an act of desperation in an effort to provide something rather than nothing. Is this where we want to set the bar for creating an educated and literate workforce, community, and engaged citizenry? This is another example of the anti-intellectualism political wave in this country that reduces all issues to oversimplified decision-making. Sometimes a city/state/country needs to think and act in ways to make sure a better society is being fostered. Of course, one would have to have an informed understanding of the role of public libraries in society to do so in this case.
Holly Swyney,
Russ Stacey,
Carrie Kish,
Cristine Butler,
Among many other things...effective 3/14/11 I will no longer be able to get any books from any other library other than Newhall, Valencia or Canyon Country on a requested transfer. Imagine how long I am going to have to wait!!! Reconsider please!
Debbie Ficarra,
Privatization of our libraries is already looking like a huge mistake! People who take advantage of all the public library system has to offer will tell you that the system wasn't broken. So why are you "fixing" it? Libraries are for the PUBLIC and shouldn't be privately operated.
Kris T Benavidez,
My family and I are regular users of the libraries. We do not live within the city limits, so my tax money will go to a library system that I can not easily access. Will I be charged to use the city libraries? There are tto many questions, not enough answers and a rushed deicision as left many qestioning the city's true motives

I don't care about hours. I don't believe LSSI will save us $$ over time. I do believe LSSI will charge fees in the future to insure their profits. I do care about the quality and quantity of materials available. I do care about well trained professional library staff. Please take time to thoroughly analyize this decision.
Linda Pursell,
I am very satisfied with LA County Newhall library and feel it is worth every penny. I resent the way we were treated by city council members, that they know what's best for us no matter what we want. I will vote accordingly.
xxxxxxxx,
Elaine Carstens,
The speed with which this was adopted demonstrates the need forcareful analysis as to the full effect on our community of losing the County Library system
Rodger L Smith,
Gloria Gunn,

this is something that the RESIDENTS vote on NOT the city council!!
xxxxxxxx,
xxxxxxxx,
A city takeover is NOT an answer for we LA County residents. The county library system has millions of items, many rare and not available in other library systems. I know this as fact because I have library cards that cover much of this state. It is most likely impossible that LSSI will be able to provide a fraction of the items to which we already have access, forcing city residents to drive long distances to once again make use of the county system that we love and already regularly utilize. It is clear that this is a personal decision, and not one designed to serve the residents that you are sworn to serve. We are, have been, and will continue to ask you to reverse your decision. Your responbility is to respond to our voices.
Penny Sande,
Carol Lauricella,
Craig Lauricella,
There are some things that are more important than money. When the services lost are of greater value than the monetary "gain," then the decision is not in the best interest of those it is meant to serve.

Don't fix what's not broken. The county library system worked fine. With the change to LSSI I no longer have access to the county's vast catalog of resources which were previously free. This change will cost me more time and money to get the materials that I need.

Libraries, like mail service, need to remain a govt function. Thomas Jefferson would agree.
John Etheridge,
Your constituents are not happy with with your actions. George Washington said "The power under the Constitution will always be in the people. It is entrusted for certain defined purposes, and for a certain limited period, to representatives of their own choosing; and whenever it is executed countrary to their interests, or not agreeable to their wishes, their servants can, and undoubtedly will be recalled."
Shelle Greene,
Eileen Butler,
Dorothy Anklam,
I request that you not separate Santa Clarita from the LA County Public Library System. We now have access to a large collection of materials and services from all over the county and I fear this would not be the case if we separate from LA Co Public Library System. Listen to what the people of the Santa Clarita Valley have to say.
xxxxxxxx,
Please readdress this decision which appears to have been
made quite hastily.
courtney lackey,
This decision will negatively impact our ability to access the vast library that we currently have access to as part of the County of LA libryary system.
james and judith spaethe,
we need to keep the libraries as they are and not change them there is nothing wrong with the county library system and we will be too limited
Carol Winkler,
Jason Conway,
I request books all the time and now you want to limit the amount of books we will have access too... How will this benefit our community when you limit knowledge? Does the city think our children education not that important to give them access all the material they will need to succeed?
Michael Magnani,
Time for a new city manager. Time for a new city council.
xxxxxxxx,
I have concerns about the financial ramifications of a city run library.
I will remember each and every one of the council members come election day if they continue to deny the voice of the people and shove this deal down our throats.
William Rubin,
I ma extremely concerned about access to the variety of materials I now enjoy due to the affiliation with the LA County Library system. I use the library extensively and most of what I reserve comes from other branches in the system.
Chris Olsen,
With thousands upon thousands of taxpaying residents entirely satisfied with the L.A. County Library system, why would the city rush through such a major decision to take over the libraries with only minimal public notice, education or input. This just reeks of an extremely poorly thought out decision and/or an attempted cover-up of the true motivations of those behind the decision. Why not take the time and energy to properly analyze this proposal?
xxxxxxxx,
I do not want the city of Santa Clarita taking over our 3 libraries.
xxxxxxxx,
I do not want the city of Santa Clarita taking over the 3 County Libraries! My family and I use the county library system on a regular basis and do not want to be limited on the books that we request. We will continue to use the county library system if the city takes over our libraries.

You need community support for this. You have none. You failed to determine what people want/expect from the library before signing the contract. This is horrific planning from the start. Suck it up, admit you acted too fast and go back to the drawing board.
xxxxxxxx,
The decision to secede from the County library system is a terrible idea, is poorly planned and has not had enough public input or transparency. It's a crooked awful thing to do to the citizen's of Santa Clarita.
xxxxxxxx,
J A Smith,
It is apparent that there are several problems with the upcoming transfer from the county to the city that must be resolved before the take over. I recommend that the council cease and desist until all the facts are known. The citizens of this city should have the right to vote on this ill considered proposal.
Ashley Nickel,
xxxxxxxx,
I smell a shady operation here. Can this be the beignning of another Bell??
Kayla Meeks,
This is a decision that needs to be made by the people that live in Santa Clarita, use the library's and pay the taxes for them. The decision should not be based on how much money we will eventually make or being able to call the new Newhall library "ours."
xxxxxxxx,
Hosanna Rodriguez,
Susan Anderson,
We rely on the libraries for ourselves and our children. We often reserve books and have already felt the changes of not being allowed to reserve books outside the SCV system. Rescind your decision on privatizing the SCV library system and go back to square one to find the money you seek for SCV and surrounding communities like Stevenson Ranch.
xxxxxxxx,
Doris W. Perry,
Susie V Kaufman,

The way this was done -- without the knowledge of Santa Clarita's citizens -- is shameful.
And you City Councilmembers jumped too quickly.
We -- the people who use our three libraries -- should have been included in any number of public discussions prior to the August 24 2010 decision. City Councilmembers acted far too hastily, and their reasons for doing so are questionable, to say the very least.
I grew up in libraries. My son grew up in libraries. Libraries are an extension of education, entertainment, and so much more. We library patrons should have had a say in this mind-numbing decision BEFORE City Councilmembers MADE this rash decision.
I've felt sick for months, now, over how this was so poorly handled, and I feel we've all been disrespected.
There is still time, Councilmembers, for you to change your minds. Don't be so rash... don't be so corporate-minded, or money-hungry, or any other number of things that have no place in this serious issue.
You CAN back out of this deal, and we'd all respect you five so much more for showing us that you're thinking... and that you have hearts.
Sheila Price,
You privatized OUR library system without OUR input; however, you will need OUR votes when you are running for reelection to the Santa Clarita City Council and for Mayor of Santa Clarita. DON'T count on OUR votes when you want and need them in the future!
Tamee Seidling,
xxxxxxxx,
James Lowe,
I'm sorry that I can't attend the meeting, as I will be at work, but the library was operating just find and should not be tampered with. Don't use our libraries as a political tool. By letting the city run the library system here would be a decline in services, and an inconvenience to pick up material from the other county libraries. Requested materials would have to be picked up in the San Fernando Valley. At the cost of gas and the time to do it makes it impossible in some cases. Please use common sense and leave our libraries as they are.
xxxxxxxx,
Jeanne Knotts,
Mary Lou Clayton,
Jill Jensen,
The time to conduct user surveys is before a decidion is made, not afterward. How you can make a decision about library services before you ask library users and non-users what they want and need is beyond me.
Please suspend the LSSI contract until you have made a conprehensive library needs survey in our community.
Denise Schumann,
Re-consider the decision to take over the Library System. There was no problems with it to begin with, why would you change something that worked. The only thing Santa Clarita tax payer haS to gain by the switch is MORE taxes! NO THANK YOU!
xxxxxxxx,
Richard McNally,
Please reconsider.
Karen Masterson,
Alan Wylie,
Libraries are public services are should remain so, they should be accountable to local residents and tax payers and should not be run for profit. LSSI have a bad reputation not only in the US, see California, Fargo etc but in the UK to see Suffolk, Somerset etc, for more info on their activities see www.dontprivatiselibraries.blogspot.com

The city council seems to make decisions without thoroughly researching things first, or allowing input from the community. The instances when people do come to the meetings and voice their concerns, some of the council members patiently listen to those concerns. Others treat those members of the pubic as little kids that are annoying and need to be told what's best for them. In the end, they go forward with 'their' decision, because 'they' know what's best for the community. I recently read on the front page of the Signal that the council was considering no longer funding Arts the the Performing Arts Center. On that same page there was another article on a makeover of Creekside Rd. was nearing completion, at a cost of 1 million dollars. Willing to spend that kind of money on landscaping a short street that is not even a main thoroughfare, yet saying they don't have the money to fund the arts? Sorry about going of on a tangent, but I think it is an example of their decision making.
Jim Uhl, valencia, 91354
I do not agree with using public funds to build a buisiness for profit, especially when the corporation is not even in our community. Our funds are too often misused by the city.

Personally, I don't believe very many people use the libraries since the advent of computers in every home. Also, they are only going to be open two to three hours a day. That hardly requires a substantial amount of funds used for such an expensive project for (Downtown Newhall).....

Clearly the City has rushed to this decision. We are facing significant cost overruns and possibly losing the library tax revenue which the library take over counted on. This may be a good deal...it may not be a good deal. I'm not sure we really know. It seems odd that the council has rushed through this process, disregarding the public's concerns. If it's even possible at this point, please slow this down and make an educated decision. I'm not a country union supporter, just a concern citizen with a family that uses the library.
xxxxxxxx, Santa Clarita, CA 91387
Our family relies on the resources of the libary system. We are concerned that the decision to takeover the libraries from the county will impact our access to the resources we use. Since no study was done to determine what resources are used and desired by city residents, it is ludicrous to say that there will be no reduction in resources or increase in fees. Please reconsider your decision and do a proper study to determine the needs and feasability.

JONAS MATULEVICIUS, 91387
It's a mistake to add additional costs to the taxpayers of the city. Especially when doing this by contracting with a private contractor will increases the cost. A comprehensive and fully transparent re-evaluation must be completed to decide what is in the best interest of the citizens of Santa Clarita.
Stacie Olson, Canyon Country 91387
My first thought here is that our City Counsel members do not care about the citizens of Santa Clarita, as they for some reason want to pass on MORE taxes! There are so many families just making it these days... and many who are NOT!
My second thought is that our Counsel members are making decisions for us, instead of with us. Maybe THEY should pay the additional millions out of their pockets. The materials available to us is a very important issue too, but I'm sick of paying MORE for less!
